Welcome to my first Saucy Spotlight blog post. This is where I focus on random topics, stories, or things that I like. This month's post will be on Halloween because it’s my favorite holiday and time of year.
Last year there were more restrictions and theme parks were closed, but there were Halloween drive-thru’s. I went to some of these drive-thru events and was surprised at how much fun they turned out to be. And, it was the first time I was ever handed a basket of food from a monster. To be specific it was the Creature from the Black Lagoon and the actor/actress did an amazing job moving like something that came from a swamp.
This year, I was able to attend a few Halloween events and also went to a Primus concert. The best halloween mazes that I got to experience was at Knott's Scary Farm. I have to say that if you love scare mazes and haven't ever been to Knott's Scary Farm, you must go. Knott's Scary Farm is my favorite theme park during Halloween time and since I hadn't been in a long time, I was so excited. In my opinion, Mesmer and The Depths were the best mazes this year. But, depending on what kind of story you like, you may prefer others. Honestly, they did an amazing job with all of them.
There were a few things I did to make my halloween events feel safe and easy. First, I didn't read any more lengthy articles on fluid dynamics. Trust me, that’s scarier than any kind of monster. Unless, it’s a face hugger alien. Second, I started breaking in my Doc Martens months ago so that I didn’t get blisters at the theme parks. Nothing attracts monsters more than hobbling one’s way around on a bloody foot. And Third, we bought pumpkins early. I hate scrambling around late in the month looking for pumpkins.
One of the things I love about Halloween is the history and the stories. It’s believed that the night before October 31st the worlds of the living and the dead intersect. This could be a comfort for some people like me who have lost loved ones close to them. I’m still waiting for a super efficient ghost phone. It would basically be like an iPhone but we could talk to the dearly departed. I know there is a spirit box that ghost hunters use, and there are mediums, but I’m talking about communication that has exceptional reception both ways just like being on the phone. Something so clear that you can hear the other person eating a gummy worm on the other end.
What if a ghost actually ghosted you though? That would be awkward. It would be like “Hey! You never returned my text!” And they would be like, “Oh… the veil was pretty thick when you texted. Next time try texting closer to October 31st and it should go through.” The thicker veil is probably like going through an area with bad reception or just being on a bad phone plan. A thinner veil is probably like being on the best Verizon plan right next to a cell tower that reaches to space. Or hooking up directly to Elon Musk’s Starlink train.
Speaking of trains, I’ve heard that there is a Murder Mystery Dinner Train experience. I haven’t tried one yet, but it sounds like it would be fun. Here's the thing about Halloween, it goes by too quick. At least for me. It's Halloween night and I am writing this post and I don't want it to be over. I'm one of those people who would be completely happy if it lasted through Christmas.
I've never lived in an area that got Trick-Or-Treaters. I was either too far from civilization or in an apartment in a city. I do enjoy dressing up, but I don't do it every year. Even if I don't go anywhere, it's fun to have a costume and take some photos. I love seeing family photos from past Halloween gatherings. Especially vintage photos from different decades.
In the Middle Ages beggars used to walk door-to-door asking for Soul Cakes in exchange for prayers. If you’re wondering what a soul cake is, it sort of resembles a shortbread biscuit and is made with sweet spices. They called them ‘Soul Cakes’ because they were given out to ‘Soulers’ who were considered children and the poor. Now, it would seem creepy if someone knocked on your door and asked for a soul cake.
Well, that's it for my thoughts on Halloween. I hope you had a good one. Now it's time to get ready for next Halloween.
